Sarah Marie Risotti was born into the world with ten little fingers and ten little toes, but the process of being born was not kind to Sarah. This is a magical, tumultuous, sad but joyful story of Sarah’s life and how her life shaped the world of those around her.

Sarah World eBook Deb Risotti

Deb Risotti’s beautiful memoir, ‘Sarah’s World,’ describes the joy and fulfillment attendant to meeting the challenges faced by a brain-damaged child for 24 years. It is a heart-warming story of courage, commitment, and—most of all—love.

Sarah was born in 1982 in a hospital near Boston that was not equipped with a fully staffed neonatal intensive care unit. When trouble struck during her delivery, a simple elevator trip to an NICU was not an option. An ambulance-transfer to a Boston hospital required time the infant did not have, ultimately leaving her profoundly brain damaged. The author and husband Jim found themselves in the stunningly difficult position of having to choose between initiating treatment unlikely to extend her life and simply allowing her to die. There was no chance at all to reverse her heart-breaking neurological deficits

The infant could not see, speak, or move either arm or hand. And she seemed to be in constant pain. The fact that her hearing was intact provided the family an avenue of communication that led them to fall deeply in love with her. Debbi and Jim learned to take care of her, then taught others, even professionals, what they had learned and invited them to share their commitment. Keeping Sarah happy and healthy may not have ‘taken a village’ but it did require a neighborhood and extended family. Everyone coming into contact with the child benefitted from being in her presence. Learning what gave her joy made them better in the process. Music became a constant for the growing child—every kind of music, from Tina Turner to light opera. Even strangers in concert halls were moved by her obvious joy.

When a priest denied Sarah the sacrament of Holy Communion, the author respectfully suggested that he was being discriminatory of the handicapped. Debbi only acted to soothe her son Danny’s anxiety about the spiritual life of his beloved big sister. But the bishop intervened! Soon other children in the church were mesmerized by the nature of Sarah's incapacities and how she perceived them and reacted to them. Soon they fell under Sarah's spell.

When Sarah was ten, she parlayed her charm into an active role in Danny’s lemonade stand business. Sales took off, possibly planting the seed in his mind to become a businessman one day!

As Sarah approached twenty she faced perceptible decline. Progressively she became isolated from her environment. Finally she died. Why did she die? A better question would be: how did she live so long? Even the most optimistic doctors had been convinced her life would be limited to maybe weeks, not months.

This book is a gem. The author not only writes well, she writes with power and passion. Reminding us that providing a loving environment for the least fortunate among us can lead to unbounded joy and fulfillment is an important achievement.

Sarah World eBook Deb Risotti Reviews

Wow... This book is a must read for anyone who knows a child with a disability. Actually, scratch that. It should be required for early middle school kids to read so that they can gain a perspective that will serve them well throughout their lives. This child and her parents are amazing. This book taught me much more than I thought I had to learn.
Deb Risotti's story of Sarah is an amazing tribute to her daughter and family and caregivers. She describes the incredible bond between Sarah and her world, and Sarah's influence of those lives that she touched.
Excellent story about a mother's love and perseverance to have her special needs child enjoy her life. Sarah's last concert was to see Celtic Woman and they performed a song Sarah loved - You Raise Me Up. That sums up Sarah's life. A must read.
Sarah's World is a must read book for all. You will witness the soul of a Mom in the pages of this book, along with the spirit of Sarah. I felt as though I could reach out and touch both. Never has a book had this type of effect on me. You will read in the book, that Deb was chosen to be Sarah's Mom on her birthday 29 years earlier. Reading this part of the book struck a chord in my heart that I will never forget. There was a numbing sensation in every fiber of my being.
Deb, Jim, and Sarah's brother, Dan were the perfect family for Sarah, as they lovingly constructed her "world" to be a place of peace, comfort, love, family, friends, fun, and adventure.
Sarah's World will bring you to a place you've never been, and you'll be so glad you went. )
Sarah was a wonderful part of my world! First of all I loved her very much and I love her mom Deb. Over the years working with Sarah, I developed a close relationship with Deb. Many of the stories and events shared in this book I had heard of or was a small part of. Reading this book has brought up many memories. I can still hear Sarah's laughter and remember the moments we shared listening to sounds and eventually music. We would sing along together as we sat on a bolster swing or while sitting on a mat table rocking back and forth. These were very special, intimate moments that will always treasure.
In this book Deb shared herself and Sarah. She shared the hopes and dreams of what she had wished for Sarah, along with pain and struggles they shared. She also shared who Sarah was and how wonderfully she touched the people who surrounded her. Sarah was strong and showed such resilience.
Her family was also very strong and responsive. They consistently looked for ways to expand Sarah's world through many of the methods Deb shared in this book. But, most all of all they shared their love!
This book reads like the movement of the pull and flow of ocean waves. The pull of struggles and challenges that arise throughout Sarah's life intensify. Sarah's story flows with successes and achievements and loving events. A rhythmic momentum captures the reader with waves of emotion sadness to lightness, sorrow to enlightenment, cheering to tenderness. Sarah's World is a mother's love story that breaks my heart wide open... still now as I remember vividly.

This book lives up to all of Deb's tremendous efforts throughout Sarah's life and in Sarah's World. It is a loving, honorable tribute to Sarah, her family and their "village".
This review is by Deb's proud sister Colleen. aka Con

This book will educate and inform teachers, therapists, doctors, parents and families.
Sarah was a unique and perfect soul. She received more love than one would think possible and gave love and happiness in return. The story of Sarah's life is not a Hollywood white-wash that ingnores the pain and difficulties the parents of a special child encounter; it is a factual and sometimes confusing array of medical and family connections. The narrator keeps just enough distance from sentementally to retain a clear unencoumbered narrative. The reader is given a choice as to how involved they wish to be in Sarah's World.
